EMDR
EMDR is a non-invasive, efficient treatment approach that reduces distress from painful memories, and helps to reconnect an individual's adaptive coping to those experiences. EMDR is used with both adults and children. The process is simply alternating sensation from one side of the body to the other*--with eye movements, gentle tapping, or sounds while lightly holding upsetting memories. Trauma and even commonplace disturbing life events (divorce, childhood humiliation and embarassment, early fear experiences) can impair one’s ability to process and integrate experiences within the central nervous system. The positive effects of EMDR are supported by a substantial body of scientifically validated research.
*Francine Shapiro, Ph.D., discovered and developed this approach, and originally named it Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing because alternating (Left-Right-Left-Right-etc...) eye movements were used. Since that point, any body sense (vision, hearing, touch) used to activate alternate sides of the body ("Bilateral stimulation) is considered EMDR processing.
